Our story
In 1989, beauty therapists and nail technicians across Australia were struggling to find the right products, the right advice, and the right support. Most wholesalers focused on hair — leaving the beauty industry underserved.
Beth Merkus, a qualified Beauty Therapist, Nail Technician, and salon owner, saw this gap and decided to act. Together with George Pawlowski, she founded Individual Beauty Care — later known as Backscratchers Nail & Beauty Supplier, and now proudly Salon First.
Beth's firsthand experience in the industry shaped everything about how we work: genuine care, practical education, and service built around the needs of working professionals. More than three decades later, those values haven't changed.
